Winter-Ready Vande Bharat Train Unveiled for Jammu & Kashmir Route

The Indian Railways has introduced a specially-designed Vande Bharat Express train tailored to endure Jammu & Kashmir’s extreme winter conditions. This new train will operate on the Katra-Srinagar route, pending approval following an inspection by the Commissioner of Railway Safety.

Currently stationed at the Shakurbasti coaching depot in New Delhi, the train boasts advanced climate-resilient features. These modifications distinguish it from the 136 Vande Bharat trains already operational across India, enabling it to meet the region’s unique challenges.

Speaking to the media, Dileep Kumar, Executive Director (Information & Publicity) of the Railway Board, highlighted the train’s enhancements. “The train includes advanced heating systems to prevent freezing of water tanks and bio-toilet tanks. It also ensures optimal functioning of the air-brake system and provides warm air for laboratories and vacuum systems, even in sub-zero temperatures,” he said.

A critical addition is the embedded heating elements in the windshield, designed to automatically defrost the driver’s front lookout glass. This ensures clear visibility for operations in severe winter conditions. Apart from these specialized features, the train retains the amenities found in other Vande Bharat models. Passengers can expect fully air-conditioned coaches, automatic plug doors, and mobile charging facilities.

The introduction of this train marks a significant step in improving connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and the rest of India. The Railway Board highlighted that this initiative reflects India’s commitment to bridging geographical and economic disparities.

The Katra-Srinagar route, a crucial segment of India’s expanding railway network, is undergoing rigorous safety inspections. Once cleared, the train will enhance passenger convenience and bolster economic integration.
